Welding III: Stainless Steel TIG Class

With Isabel Delgado

This class has suggested but not required prerequisites. See below for details.

Learn the fundamentals of stainless steel TIG welding in this hands-on metal fabrication class. Because stainless steel behaves much differently than mild steel, producing clean, high-quality joints requires strict heat management and careful puddle control. This course covers the essential GTAW techniques used in food service equipment, automotive fabrication, and precision metalwork. We will guide you through machine setup, torch control, and filler metal application so you can confidently lay down precise welds on thin metals. Join this supportive friendly workshop, expand your handy DIY skillset, and connect with a community of fellow makers!

What You’ll Make:
Students will practice TIG welding on thin stainless steel coupons, focusing on producing clean, controlled joints. You will take home your best welded sample as a permanent reference piece to showcase your new skills!

Skills & Concepts You’ll Learn:

  • Fundamentals of the TIG welding process for thin stainless steel.

  • Setting up a TIG welding machine specifically for stainless steel applications.

  • Mastering torch control, arc length, and filler rod coordination.

  • Crucial heat control techniques to prevent warping and oxidation in thin metals.

  • Proper preparation and cleaning of stainless steel prior to welding.

  • Understanding metallurgical behavior: how stainless steel differs from mild steel.

  • Identifying and manipulating the weld puddle to execute proper lap joints and T-joints.

  • Understanding why TIG welding stainless steel requires precise technique and is considered an advanced fabrication skill.

Equipment & Tools You’ll Learn:

  • TIG welding machines and TIG torches.

  • Stainless steel filler rod (316L) and tungsten preparation tools.

  • Thin stainless steel welding coupons (308L).

  • Welding helmets, protective gloves, and safety gear.

  • Metalworking clamps and welding tables.

Class Outline:

  • Prep & Theory: TIG safety, machine setup, proper metal cleaning, and a review of stainless alloys and filler metal selection (308L, 316L, and 309L).

  • Demonstration: Instructor shows proper torch angle, arc length, heat management, and filler rod timing.

  • Hands-On Practice: Students run beads on flat stainless coupons to develop muscle memory and practice heat control.

  • Joint Fabrication: Students weld basic lap and T-joints with one-on-one instructor guidance.

  • Wrap-Up: Review of welded coupons, troubleshooting common issues, and Q&A.

Other Class Info:

  • Prerequisites: Welding II: Steel TIG or other TIG experience is strongly recommended, but not required.

  • Class Capacity: 6 maximum, 3 minimum

  • Materials Provided?: Yes

  • Age Limit: 17+. Guardian required if under 18 (info).

  • Partner Ticket Available?: No

  • Clothing/Equipment Requirements?: Pants, long-sleeved shirts, and closed toed shoes that you don’t mind getting dirty. Fabrics must be natural like cotton or leather - do not wear synthetics as they can melt if a spark comes in contact.
