Floating Shelves Woodworking Class
With Tomas Vallejos
*You do not need to take any of our Woodworking Fundamentals classes including Woodworking I, II, or III in order to take this class. No experience is required.
In this woodworking class you will learn how to make and hang a floating shelf all out of one piece of rustic alder. This functional piece works great as a nightstand in the bedroom, a sunny area for plants in the living room, a display for your favorite glasses in the kitchen, or space for guest towels in the bathroom. All skill levels are welcome from total beginner to advanced.
We will start off by talking about how to plan and lay out the parts of a project on a rough sawn board in order to obtain the best yield. This is important to achieve things like grain matching throughout the piece. You will then learn how to cut the mitered corners for the shelf as well as how to strengthen and join them using a biscuit joiner. We will also learn how to cut a groove for the back to sit in. Next we will discuss sanding and finishing techniques as well as the importance of wood movement and how to allow for it. Lastly we will make and attach a French cleat and go over some tips for easy mounting on your wall.
