Hoop Art Essentials Embroidery Class

All materials are provided for this class. Please do not bring your own fabric, hoops, or tools. You are invited to bring a simple line drawing or high-contrast printed image (approx. 2.5" x 2.5") to work from, otherwise we will provide lovely flora and fauna themed patterns for you.

Learn essential embroidery techniques and create a beautiful piece of art to keep or gift! In this class, you’ll gain the skills to complete a 3" hoop project from start to finish. You will have the choice to use our provided flora and fauna themed patterns, or you are welcome to bring your own small (2.5”x2.5” max) image to stitch. This workshop will lay the foundation for countless projects, from creating custom wall art to embellishing clothing and accessories. Sure, online videos are loaded with tutorials, but nothing beats making friends and finding inspiration in a live class, with an instructor helping you past roadblocks so you can progress quickly. Join this supportive beginner-friendly workshop, expand your handy DIY skillset, and connect with a community of fellow makers!

What You’ll Make:

A 3” round embroidery piece using a variety of cotton fabrics and beginner-friendly stitches. You’ll be able to frame your finished piece to display on a wall, or apply your new skills to customize clothing, gifts, and home decor.

Skills & Concepts You’ll Learn:

  • Preparation: How to choose and prepare images, turning images into pattern stickers, and alternative ways to apply patterns to fabric.

  • Setup: How to select and prepare fabric, installing fabric into a hoop, and tips for handling thread.

  • Stitch Techniques: A variety of beginner-friendly stitches such as running stitch, backstitch, whipped stitch, chain stitch, and French knots.

  • Finishing: Ways to complete and/or frame finished pieces of art.

Equipment & Tools You’ll Use:

  • Fabric scissors, embroidery needles, hoops, thread, and design transfer tools.

Class Outline:

  • Introduction & Design: Talk about design selection, show examples of embroidered pieces, and prepare pattern stickers or alternative transfers.

  • Setup & Materials: Talk about fabric and thread choice, thread handling tips, and hooping the fabric.

  • Demonstration: Go over threading a needle and review visual aids describing different stitches and how to execute each one.

  • Hands-On Practice: Start sewing! Students work on their hoops while the instructor circles around to address questions and help with technique.

  • Wrap-Up: As students finish up, discussion on various ways to complete finished pieces for display on a wall or in a frame.
